The Books My Students Recommend

Yesterday was the last official meeting of the creative writing class that I teach. Almost everyone was there, and as is usually the case, we were all a little giddy – either from glee with the prospect of the end of the term or from lack of sleep – these feelings are remarkably similar.

For that class meeting, I asked them to bring me their book recommendations since I hope to do my normal holiday binge reading. Here are the books they recommended:

Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles

Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith

The Foundation for Inner Peace’s A Course in Miracles

The Art of Happiness by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Iron John by Robert Bly

Wild at Heart and Captivating by John Eldredge

Chosen Comic Book Series by Mark Millar

House by Frank C. Peretti and Ted Dekker

The Beast of Noor by Janet Lee Carey

I love the variety in this list, and I plan to read all of them.

If you had to pick two books to recommend to writers who are just starting out in their craft, what books would you want to share with them?

Also, don’t forget the “Best Book of 2009″ giveaway. Win five Bookmooch points just for naming the best book you read this year. Visit that post and make a comment. I can’t wait to read your recommendations, too. Thanks.

GoneAway Into the Land – second edition, is just released. For adolescents and adults this novel is being touted as one of the most unique works of fiction to come out in a long time. The story’s entertainment value is enticing, but the book’s symbolism is inescapable. It’s an epic novel best described as a modern day Lord of the Rings. Fantasy and heart collide into a new genre in this first book of a promising series. You do not want to miss this unique offering by Jeffrey B. Allen. I would be pleased and proud to have the publisher send you a copy for your review.

Please let me know. The second Edition is receiving praises that edition # one could never have. I am starting a school donation program in January. Please let me know if you would like further information.

    Thank you and keep reading.

I must get a copy of The Beast of Noor. I’ve been an advocate for Janet Lee Carey for over the past year since I found Dragon’s Keep which was one of my favorite reads of last year. I even got the chance to interview her for my own blog. I happy to see she has some fans among your students.
