The Sun Magazine

I just finished reading the December issue of The Sun, and my spirit is settled like it hasn’t been from something I read in a long time. I feel like I’ve just risen up from sivasana and am more rested than I’ve been in days.

The stories read as pieces of life, not crafted gems of Faberge that take all of the energy of a million oppressions to create. . . they’re real, beautiful, and even inspiring – something that bends my little idealist heart with glee.

So check it out and enjoy. The Sun Cover of the January 2008 Issue of The Sun

Agony, Ecstacy, Feminism and Gore – Angela Carter

Sorry for the long lag between posts. I’m between semesters, and I took some well-needed time to rest, read and present two conference papers.

I’ve been re-reading Angela Carter these days. Her work is amazing. Her book Saints and Strangers was assigned to me in college as part of a postmodern fictions class, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Her short stories are often revisions of fairy tales, usually from a feminist perspective. One of my favorites is “The Love Lives of Lady Purple.” Great stuff. Bloody, empowering, and beautiful – a lovely trio.

For other writers like Carter, particularly in their incorporate of fairy tales, I’d also recommend you look at the work of A.S. Byatt.
